Asbury isn't a big city. It's about 2.7 square miles just west of Dubuque, with around 6,000 residents — the kind of place where the citywide garage sale is genuinely citywide, not a scattered event you need a full tank of gas to navigate.
What makes Asbury's sale worth knowing about is how the city runs it. Now in its third year of listing sales electronically, Asbury uses an interactive map and search tool where sellers list what they're selling and buyers can search by keyword or item type. That's not standard for a town this size. If you're specifically looking for tools, kids' toys, vintage furniture, or kitchen gear, you can search for those items and see exactly which sales have them — before you leave the house.
The 2026 Annual Garage Sale Weekend runs Friday, May 1 through Saturday, May 2. Two days, all day.

The keyword search is the whole point
Most citywide garage sale maps are just maps — pins on a screen with maybe an address and a time. Asbury's version lets you search by keyword. Type in "tools" or "kids' toys" or "vintage furniture" and the system shows you which sales have those items and drops them onto an interactive map. That's a meaningful difference, especially if your goal is something specific rather than a general browse.
Here's how to actually use it: pull up the garage sale viewer, enter what you're looking for, and see which sales match. In a city this compact, you might only get a handful of pins — but those are the stops where you have a real chance of finding what you're after. That's a better morning than driving to 15 driveways hoping someone happens to be selling a bookshelf.
If you're browsing more generally, the map is still useful for a different reason: sellers with longer, more detailed item lists are usually the bigger sales. A listing that mentions home décor, kitchen equipment, office furniture, and household goods is probably a multi-family sale worth prioritizing over a single line that just says "miscellaneous."
You can realistically see most of it
This is Asbury's quiet advantage over larger citywide sales. Dubuque's citywide sale sprawls across the whole river city. Asbury's event fits inside a few square miles of residential neighborhoods, mostly branching off Asbury Road.
That means you don't need a route strategy so much as a starting point. Pick the end of town with the most map pins and work your way across. In a city this size, you'll pass most of the active sales just by driving the main residential streets. With two full days to work with, even a casual shopper can cover the whole city — hit one side of town Friday, the other Saturday, and still have time to circle back to anything you want a second look at.
For Dubuque-area shoppers, that makes Asbury a good standalone trip or an easy add-on to a bigger garage sale weekend. Several Tri-State communities run their sales in the same May window, so you can pair Asbury with Dubuque, Cascade, or other nearby towns if you want a full weekend.

What to expect from the inventory
Asbury is a bedroom community with high homeownership (over 90%), a young median age, and a lot of families with kids. The inventory at garage sales tends to reflect that: children's clothing and toys, household items from people upgrading or remodeling, outdoor gear, and the kind of solid everyday furniture that families cycle through as kids grow.
The median household income in Asbury is well above average, which often translates to higher-quality items at garage sale prices. You're more likely to find name-brand kids' gear, decent furniture, and well-maintained household goods than you would at a typical sale in a lower-income area. That's not a guarantee — it's a pattern worth knowing about.
Multi-family sales are common here too. Asbury's neighborhoods are tight-knit enough that neighbors often combine their stuff into one larger sale, which means individual stops can have more variety than you'd expect from a single household.
How to get listed on the official map (for sellers)
To appear on the city's interactive map, sellers need to submit the Asbury City-Wide Garage Sale Participation Form. You'll provide your address and item descriptions, and city staff review submissions before they go live on the map.

Two things worth knowing: submitting means consenting to have your address displayed publicly on the map, and your item descriptions directly affect whether shoppers find your sale. Since buyers can search by keyword, the words you use in your listing are how they'll discover you. A listing that includes "baby clothes, stroller, Pack 'n Play, toddler toys" will show up when someone searches for any of those terms. A listing that says "various items" won't show up for anything.
Since Asbury's whole system is built around keyword search, writing a detailed, specific listing description is probably the single highest-return thing you can do as a seller here.
A few things worth knowing
Check the map close to the sale, not just when it first goes live. Sellers can update their listings, and new submissions may be approved after the initial batch. The map you see a week before the sale may not match the map on Friday morning.
Friday morning is your best window for selection. Inventory is freshest and crowds are lightest at the start of the weekend. If you're driving in from Dubuque or elsewhere in the Tri-State area and can only make one day, Friday is the one to pick.
Asbury Road is the main artery. Most neighborhoods branch off of it. If you're unfamiliar with the city, start there and work outward — you'll naturally hit the residential streets where sales are concentrated.
Cash is still king at garage sales, but having exact change or small bills ($1s and $5s) will make every stop faster.
